The Best of Both Worlds: Hybrid Open Source Data Management Platforms

Please join our upcoming webinar with Tony Baer from Ovum where we will discuss the pros and cons of a “hybrid open source” strategy vs. an “open source first” strategy.

In the Big Data era, open source technologies have seen increased adoption, with an enormous degree of impact on the entire technology ecosystem. For example, many of the programming frameworks, including Hadoop and certain NoSQL databases, are all available as open source.

Together these two frameworks cover a large portion of both compute engines and algorithms. While many enterprises who support open source projects continue to use vendor-specific technology solutions, an “open source first” strategy has also been adopted by many enterprises as well.

Though not the only reason, cost savings is among the top reasons for the increased adoption of open source. Historically, open source has been thought of as “free” software, as the source code is readily available and can be downloaded from a variety of different sources. But oftentimes, this “free” software has significant costs associated with it in the form of support, integration, updates, and maintenance.

All in all, is an “open source first” strategy more cost-effective than hybrid open source strategies? How do enterprises know where to draw the line? Are certain technologies better suited for open source compared to others? And, why do we increasingly see a hybrid approach that blends open source with proprietary software as the new norm for enterprises?

To weigh in on this discussion, Tony Baer, Principal Analyst, Information Management for Ovum, and Steve Wilkes, CTO of Striim, will be taking a closer look at the true costs and benefits of using open source data platforms in an upcoming webinar on September 13.

They will first examine how a hybrid approach avoids reinventing the wheel for commodity technologies and focuses on delivering unique IP. Further, they will also discuss how a hybrid approach brings together the best of both worlds for enterprises that want cost savings and enterprise-grade solutions.
