Key Takeaways from AWS re:Invent 2018

Striim spent last week in Las Vegas exhibiting at AWS re:Invent, Amazon’s annual user conference for the global cloud computing community that featured keynote presentations, deep dive technical sessions, hackathons, and certification opportunities.AWS re:Invent

This was the biggest re:Invent ever, with 50,000+ cloud enthusiasts in attendance, and made for the perfect setting for some great conversations with potential customers, integrators and partners. Furthermore, we were able to really spend quality time talking to the community-at-large to more deeply understand their current data management practices, how they’re using their AWS environment, and what they’re looking for to further maximize their solutions.

Based on our week-long presence at the conference, below are some of our key takeaways from AWS re:Invent 2018:

  • Operationalizing ML Models: Amazon continues to double down on machine learning and artificial intelligence, and the name of the game is speed. Amazon announced the launch of the AWS Marketplace for ML and AI models, enabling developers to buy and sell machine learning models. Additionally, to help speed up training for AI models, Amazon announced multiple SageMaker offerings. While this will most certainly help build models, being able to build and deploy ML/AI models quickly is important, it’s also critical that the models aren’t being trained with high-latency data. This is why real-time streaming integration is a critical component in ML/AI initiatives.
  • Amazon Managed Streaming for Kafka (Amazon MSK): With the announcement of Amazon MSK, users can easily build and run applications that use Apache Kafka to process streaming data, which opens up numerous opportunities to interact with emerging technology. With Apache Kafka being one of the most popular open source platforms for building real-time data pipelines and applications, this managed service promotes what the industry has been seeing moving towards for the last few years – a streaming-first architecture.
  • Amazon Builds Its Own Time Series DB – Amazon Timestream: Amazon created and launched its own time series DB, a fully managed database designed to track items over time. Geared towards IoT and operational applications, Amazon Timestream makes it easy to store and analyze trillions of events per day at a fraction of the cost of relational databases. This time series DB will be critical for helping organizations make real-time decisions based on measuring changes.
  • Blockchain Offerings: It was interesting to see that Amazon is still very much engaged in blockchain technology by providing ledger services powered by Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric: Quantum Ledger Database and Amazon Managed Blockchain. According to AWS CEO Andy Jessy, this was in response to customer demand, so even though cryptocurrency is still in a volatile state, customers still see a tremendous amount of potential for this technology in other areas, and AWS is working to help them realize that vision.

At the end of the day, data is a company’s most valuable asset and to get the most from it, adopting a cloud strategy offers numerous benefits. AWS re:Invent was a great event that showcased the future of cloud computing and how technology is enabling organizations to securely adopt a hybrid approach. We’re excited to see how the activities from the show translate over the next 12 months, especially the growing number of integration opportunities it presents, and can’t wait to be back next year.

Big Data LDN 2018

Key Takeaways from Big Data LDN 2018

I spent last week in the London Borough of Kensington speaking and exhibiting at Big Data LDN. For me, personally, it was wonderful to finally present in my home country.

Big Data LDN 2018Big Data LDN was a really interesting show. Firstly, it was free to attend. Secondly, they had amazing content. As such, there were close to 8,000 attendees and 130 presentations.

Despite the name, there really wasn’t much focus on what is traditionally thought of as Big Data. Instead, they had keynotes plus seven major focus areas represented in different theaters. On the technology side, these were Fast Data, AI, and Data Ops. The strategy side included Data Driven approaches, Self-Service Analytics, Customer Experience, and Governance / MDM. I gave two talks in the Fast Data theater, but could have touched on most of the different focus areas.

This seems to be a common trend in the data industry – Strata is no longer ‘Strata +Hadoop,’ and Hadoop Summit became DataWorks Summit – and highlights an industry moving from Hadoop-based Big Data technologies towards streaming data, cloud and AI. It’s unlikely that Big Data LDN will rebrand itself, however, given that it is a rapidly growing show (+40% year-on-year), I don’t see it shrinking any time soon.

Cloud, however, was conspicuously missing from the session tracks. I have a strong feeling we may see a Cloud Theater next year in addition to the existing ones. They added the Fast Data Theater for this year’s conference and it was incredibly well-attended with standing room only for a lot of the sessions.

The topics of the keynotes were equally interesting with a lot of buzz around the Big Data Debate. Michael Stonebraker, always a crowd-pleaser, was the major keynote speaker. He emphasized how data integration, especially with high volume and velocity, was the key to success, with Data Scientists currently spending 90 percent of their time just obtaining reliable data.

All of this was great validation of how on-point our presentations were. The first one, highlighting the power of Streaming Integration, covered most of the key points of integration at scale and velocity, and linked together other key topics like AI, analytics, customer experience, and data ops. The second focused on operational machine learning, and provided a path to help Data Scientists work with fast data to streamline the path to enable real-time predictions.

Overall Big Data LDN was a great show, and wonderful to spend time in London. I really hope to be back next year.

Key Takeaways on Financial Services Security from the FS-ISAC Fall Summit

Last week, Striim brought their financial services security offerings to the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC) Fall Summit, the only industry forum for collaboration on critical security threats facing the global financial services sector. Leading security experts and professionals gathered for three days to share case studies, discuss modern threats facing their business, and network within the community.Financial Services Security

As financial services security infrastructure becomes more susceptible to intrusions due to the evolution of security threats and the growing number of entry points, Striim signed on to the conference to demonstrate how Striim’s streaming data integration capabilities is enhancing how organizations detect and alert on potential threats.

In support of FS-ISAC, we posted a blog post, “Real-Time Enterprise Security Analysis with Streaming Integration,” highlighting how Striim’s core capabilities around financial services security complements current enterprise security solutions so that security analysts can make critical, data-driven decisions in real time.

Based on our conversations with attendees and other vendors over the three days, below are four key takeaways from FS-ISAC:

  • Thinking beyond traditional SIEM platforms: A vast majority of the attendees we spoke with unanimously agreed that traditional SIEM platforms are simply not good enough, especially when it comes to separating signal from noise amidst security events. In explaining our platform, most attendees saw immense value in using Striim in-front of the SIEM platforms to filter and correlate data from third party vendors (e.g. Threat Intelligence Providers).
  • SIEM platforms are getting expensive: In addition to the upfront costs, the consumption-based pricing of many SIEM platforms is leading to spiraling costs. Using Striim, the unexpected costs can be controlled as our platform can filter and route the high volume and velocity data into appropriate targets—routing true signals into SIEM platforms, and noise into cheaper storage that can be referenced for compliance and other investigations when required.
  • Integrations, Integrations and More Integrations: We learned that, in the realm of financial services security solutions, having a successful cybersecurity strategy involves integrations with various types of security vendors including Threat Intelligence Platform (TIP) vendors, who primarily aggregate, normalize, and enrich threat feeds from a variety of sources, as well as Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) vendors. Integrations with these vendors enhances the potential of offloading of real-time security operations from traditional SIEM platforms. Striim’s strength in integration with heterogeneous external sources and targets is highly valuable when integrating with TIPs for getting the latest reference threat data (e.g. blacklist IPs) and integrating with SOARs for real-time alerting and automation.
  • More Trust in the Cloud: Historically, moving to the cloud had often been met with doubt and uncertainty in the ability to keep private particularly financial information safe and secure. Compared to previous security events we’ve attended, we noticed an uptick in the number of sessions there were regarding how to securely move to a cloud environment. Sessions included case studies on a successful move to the cloud, what you should be asking cloud providers, and how cloud computing can offer stronger controls and better threat management than most traditional tools and environments. Striim is a leader in secure movement of on-premises data to cloud environments, enabling in-flight enrichment of data streams with data masking algorithms.

This year’s FS-ISAC Fall Summit was an enormous success, and Striim was proud to be a part of it. Key Takeaways from Strata NY 2018

Striim both sponsored and exhibited at Strata NY, engaging with industry professionals about emerging technologies and practices in the data community. Based on some of the great conversations I had, as well as the news coming out of the show, my key takeaways from Strata NY 2018 all center around just how important streaming integration is for enabling many of the key data trends.

The three major themes at Strata were machine learning, hybrid cloud architectures, and new generations of data warehousing powered by technology like Apache Kudu. What all of these have in common is, how do you put them into action?

Whether it is adopting hybrid cloud services for elastically scalable solutions, utilizing machine learning to optimize business operations, or leveraging fast analytics for instant insight, they all rely on one thing: moving away from batch-oriented architectures to streaming technologies, as well as integrating new and legacy resources.

And this is the very essence of Streaming Integration.

Striim and Strata – On the Same Page

We made several key announcements during the show that aligned extremely well with the direction that enterprise companies are gravitating towards, and need help with.

Organizations are looking for easier ways to adopt hybrid cloud solutions. At the show, we announced that Striim expanded integration capabilities for the Microsoft Azure cloud environment. Striim now enables organizations to move continuous, real-time data from a variety of sources to Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Database for PostgreSQL. To learn more about this, read our press release, “Striim Expands Integration with Microsoft Cloud Services, Solutions.”

Additionally, we announced expanded integration with Google Cloud Platform. Striim can now help move real-time data from a number of sources to Google BigQuery and Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL and MySQL. Read the news for more, “Striim Expands Integration with Google to Move Real-Time Data to Google Cloud Platform.”

Finally, in support of our Cloudera partnership, we announced further integration capabilities for Apache Kudu that now include continuous data validation for stream processing and delivery to Kudu. With Kudu being utilized for fast analytics based on its low-latency architecture, this is important for users to attain reliable real-time insights. Additionally, Kudu’s tagline is “fast analytics on fast data.” But how do you get fast data in the first place? You need a streaming integration platform like Striim for that to happen. Read the press release: “Striim Bolsters Integration with Apache Kudu.”

Striim already has successful implementations for operationalizing machine learning. You can learn more about the approach in our blog Operationalizing Machine Learning Through Streaming Integration, which includes a sandbox and instructions so you can follow along at your own pace.

Wrapping up my key takeaways from Strata NY, in order to adopt many of the new technologies showcased at Strata, and gain real business value from their data, organizations need to adopt a streaming data architecture, and that came through extremely clearly at the show. Striim is on the cutting edge of enabling organizations to move their data in real-time, from a variety of locations, so they can adopt hybrid cloud solutions, utilize environments that support fast analytics, or confidently move forward with whatever modern technologies they’re looking to pursue.

Striim CTO Steve Wilkes in Denver; Why streaming analytics is a must!

This past week I made the trip down the major Colorado arterial highway that runs north – south from Wyoming to New Mexico. Striim was giving a presentation in the Denver Technical Center and Striim CTO, Steve Wilkes, was the keynote presenter. Organized by Radiant Advisers, an independent research and advisory firm that “delivers practical, innovative research and thought-leadership to transform today’s organizations into tomorrow’s data-centric industry leaders,” this was too close to my office to miss. I have known Steve for more than a decade and to have an opportunity to hear Steve always proves stimulating and as much as he has presented of late, he confided to me, his enthusiasm and interaction with the audience made the fast trip down to Denver worthwhile.

The presentation centered on “Modernizing Data Platforms with Streaming Pipelines” which Steve then expanded on, highlighting why “Steaming analytics and machine learning are essential for (such things as) Cybersecurity, AI, IoT, and much more!” However, what struck me most was the material Steve used to highlight just how many open source projects were out there and how many layers of middleware are involved to simply provide a way to ingest, process and then highlight important information gleaned from the multitude of transactions in flight at any point of time.

For instance, noted Steve, even with all of the open source projects out there, simply building a streaming analytics platform from open source is just too daunting a project to start from scratch. For an effective streaming engine to provide value you have to think of the choices you have for distributed high-speed message infrastructure where the options include ActiveMQ, Kafka, etc. Complementing your choice here for messaging infrastructure you then need to select an appropriate in-memory data grid, a role where products already familiar to the NonStop community provide an option and here I am referring to products like Redis.

From here it gets really messy for the average systems programmer – what about data collection, processing and analytics and yes, final data delivery. Products like Kafka might be reused but then again, you need to look at Cassandra and Hive as well as Flink, Storm and Nifi and Logstash. Finally, you may want to then store the results of the capture / analytics / delivery process and your choices here will include offerings like Cassandra and Hbase. Many of these are Apache projects, of course, but even with all the work Apache have fostered under its umbrella, it’s only the basics. Still more has to be done once you have walked through all your options for building your own streaming analytics platform.

A topic even more familiar to the NonStop community and that comes with the NonStop platform out-of-the-box involves developing what Steve referred to as the “glue-code” – all that is need to cluster, scale, be reliable and secure and yes, have all the associated monitoring and management any crucial subsystem is expected to have. Even with this architecture fully embraced, you still need to add the human element – the UI. Both graphical and command line interfaces are important as well as a comprehensive set of dashboards to display the all-important in-memory analytics produced by your streaming analytics platform. Getting the picture? You can’t simply say you are going to build out the equivalent platform solely with Kafka as so many pieces are missing once you get past the rudimentary components on offer today with Kafka. And this is where Striim provides businesses today with value – it comes with all of the above addressed via a mix of open source and all the integration or glue components included.

In the article just published in the October 2017, issue of NonStop Insider, Out of time but not out of options we make the observation that what Striim brings to the NonStop community is truly remarkable. Unfortunately, even as the core message of HPE is revolving around “Simplify Hybrid IT” it would seem that HPE really isn’t getting the message about the importance of analytics, particularly when it comes to transaction processing and the actionable data generated in real time. Streaming analytics platforms do not require a rip-and-replace attitude when it comes to implementation as it truly can be bolted onto what exists today which should appeal to HPE and to the NonStop community. On the other hand, HPE’s own IT department is already using Striim, so perhaps the message about the value proposition of Striim is beginning to percolate within HPE.

At the upcoming NonStop Technical Boot Camp there will be a very strong presence from the Striim team. The customer base has expanded considerably since the last event and the scope of the business problems being addressed by Striim is remarkable. While Steve gave an informative presentation on Striim in Denver this week, should you want to know more about just how well Striim can integrate with your NonStop solutions today and how its Change Data Capture elements allow it to be phased in to your production environment without causing any disruption to your traditional approaches to transaction processing, then stop by the Striim team booth at the Boot Camp exhibition. We look forward to seeing you there!

Striim Introduces Solution at IoT World to Address Three Primary IoT Data Challenges

The Striim Team is excited to introduce a data management solution to address the key data challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) at IoT World, booth #218, from May 16-18, 2017, in Santa Clara, CA.

IoT World will bring together thought leaders from several different industries to discuss the growing impact and potential that the Internet of Things has in both the enterprise and consumer marketplace, and we’re thrilled to be able to share our knowledge and expertise in dealing with the volumes of data the IoT is generating.

At IoT World, there will be countless vendors showcasing their ability to analyze IoT data. However, Striim will be the only vendor demoing a streaming data management solution capable of addressing three of the primary challenges in handling IoT data:

  • Managing the tsunami of data generated by IoT devices – because by 2023, we’ll only be able to store a small fraction of the data being generated annually (IDC).
  • Integrating IoT data with the enterprise (i.e. data from enterprise databases, log files, message and event queues) and analyze it in real-time – because business operations cannot make decisions based on IoT data alone.
  • Addressing IoT security issues associated with the explosion of connected devices – because devices are becoming more business-critical, therefore increasing the exposure of companies to cyberattacks.

At the speed at which businesses operate in today’s world, companies need to incorporate a solution that pre-processes and analyzes IoT data with all necessary enterprise data, allowing them to make informed decisions in-time and in-context to improve operational efficiency, drive intelligent innovation and make the IoT-enabled enterprise more secure.

Transcending Space and Time: 4 Use Cases on Streaming Analytics at the Intersection of Enterprise, Cloud, and IT

Here’s an overview:

It is becoming increasingly necessary in modern data architectures to distribute data workloads across on-prem, cloud and IoT environments. Many factors including latency requirements, geolocation, and how long data must be stored determine where data resides and how to gain insights most efficiently. In these environments, the concept of right-time analytics is highly relevant, and demands a streaming analytics solution that transcends these environments to deliver the right answers at the right time.

Join this session and delve into 4 enterprise-scale, business-critical use cases where streaming analytics is the key to enabling real-time data integration and right-time insights in hybrid cloud, industrial IoT, and fog computing environments.

Steve will also demo the award-winning Striim platform and be on-hand to answer questions during two half-day courses presented by industry analyst, Mark Madsen, President of Third Nature:
